Healthcare and agro-food exhibitions open next week in Erbil

Erbil, Kurdistan – Iraq (KRG.org) – Businessmen, officials and experts from Iraq and abroad will gather in Erbil next week for an exhibition on healthcare and agriculture, with the aim of modernising and developing these vital sectors.

The Iraq Medicare and Iraq Agro-Food trade shows will run from 29 November to 2 December at the exhibition ground in Erbil, capital of the Kurdistan Region. Thanks to its security, stability and growing economy, Kurdistan has become the gateway for doing business in Iraq and hosts several exhibitions and conferences every year.

One of Iraq's most pressing needs today is the rehabilitation of healthcare. The modernization of the healthcare sector is a top priority for the Iraqi government, which budgeted 4 billion US dollars to it in 2009. The current healthcare system requires modernization of equipment, training and education for personnel, and enhancing the overall standard of care. There are approximately 288 hospitals and 2,000 primary healthcare clinics operating in Iraq.

The Iraq Medicare Exhibition and Conference offers international and regional suppliers a platform to reach Iraqi healthcare professionals both in the private and public sector.

The Iraq Agro-Food exhibition, which is in its third year, will be held simultaneously, covering the country's needs in agriculture, food, food processing and packaging.

Once considered the breadbasket of the Middle East, Iraq currently imports 80% of basic foodstuffs, estimated at almost 1.4 billion dollars per year. Nevertheless, agriculture employs 30% of the people. With the population estimated to reach 40 million by 2025, the country’s market and needs will continue to grow.

The Iraqi cabinet has allocated 17 billion dollars to support agriculture all across Iraq. In addition, the Kurdistan Regional Government’s Ministry of Agriculture has a five-year strategic plan to rehabilitate agriculture and provide self-sufficiency in food, food processing, storage, and packaging. The Agro-Food show will give sector specialists and buyers the opportunity to present equipment, knowledge and expertise to tens of thousands of trade visitors.
